Why Handmade Soap Becomes Brown After 1 Week In Malaysia

So why is it that some soaps when we make its so cantik but after sometime it becomes all dark brown? 

If you are a soap maker and have encountered this situation before; this is for you

So basically the culprit as to why this happens is actually your scents! 

You see when you use scents that are vanilla based; means any scents thats buttery, or creamy or even choc scents; they all have added vanillin inside; which causes the soaps to become brown. 

This reaction happens because of oxidation when the soaps are exposed to air and lye during curing process.

 

So what to do? 

We can add vanillin stabilizer in it to counter this discoloration. However; i personally feel that its not cost effective.

So instead; what i usually recommend is to just do layering; where by the darker colored layer will get the scent; while the lighter one doesnt get this scent. it will give you nice design + you will still get the smell.

Now not all fragrances that have vanilin will become dark brown; it depends on the percentage of vanilin in it. 

Usually higher percentage will give you darker color. Color can range from Creamy to beige to very dark brown.

Always make sure to check with your supplier before purchasing to find put whats the vanilin content of the scent.
